Join Host Melissa Ketelsen for a weekend of education, exploration, foraging and cooking mushrooms throughout Door County.

Finding her love for fungi through spending the last 5 years working for the parks systems, Melissa was born and raised in the inner city of Milwaukee. Her journey began in fitness and nutrition while managing and cooking at a small restaurant that focused on connecting with local farmers. Later moving to the driftless area discovering her love for environmental protection, she came to study the benefits that fungi had for her body and the world around her. Reading and studying everyday while on the lawn mower or exploring growing mushrooms herself at home, a full blown obsession to learn as much as she could about the Kingdom fungi began. Foraging and cooking 16 species in her first season, she posted short videos online to share the experience. Melissa found community through social media where she has been able to travel and share her passion. She enjoys volunteering for the Forest Service and Myological societies as she believes community and educational outreach is the most vital role in the human experience. She has been a guest speaker/instructor at The Ohio Mushroom Festival, Wisconsin Women of the Outdoors.

Saturday, September 4:

8 am: Breakfast in The Pine Lodge (pastries, granola, coffee, tea, fruit)

8:30- 9:30am: Presentation on foraging basics and identification, outlining the day, handing out pamphlets of mushrooms that are safe to forage, Foraging mannerisms, and discussing shuttles

9:45am: Board shuttles to foraging trails for first foray 

1:00-2:00: Lunch and setting up an identification table where we will discuss INaturalist and a book table so we can all learn how to set up a table and properly identify mushrooms 

Short break for everyone to get ready for another foray before dinner

3:30pm: Load the next shuttle for another area for foraging

7-8:30pm: Dinner and cooking demonstration using mushrooms for desserts to savory sauces
